When plants die, they decompose with time, and the end product of this process is a dark crumbly material that is called ‘compost’, it has so many benefits to provide for soil; the more compost you make and use on the soil, the more porous it will be, and the more air and water it will retain in our dry weather. Compost is a valuable source of mineral nutrients which all plants need such as nitrogen and phosphorus, as organic matter in the compost breaks down, these minerals and more are slowly released and made available to the plants. In short, plants need three key things from soil: water, air, and nutrients, and compost helps to provide all three.

Even if you do everything wrong, you'll still end up with decent compost. Just chop everything up and toss it in an aerated container, keep it moist and keep mixing as much as you can. Don't worry too much about it, and start composting, it's so much easier than you think.

And yes, I’m not sure about the ink in the newspapers, so I stopped composting them, I’ve actually only used them once, now most of my carbon comes from wood shavings, cardboard and dried grass clippings. Papers are taken by GTC recycling. Found that papers take long to compost.

Well, I check/mix/add water whenever I have new stuff to add from the kitchen. And the jars I leave for the kitchen fill up every 3 days. Compost has to stay moist but not dripping wet, overwatering produces mould and a bad smell. But it’ll still be compost.
I’d like to note that compost ‘cooks’ faster in the summer than winter. Do start Now if you’re planning to, because it keeps shrinking and shrinking, and you can use it anytime. I keep adding things to my finished compost all the time, as I will use it in about 3 weeks time. And even when I do use it, I will keep making compost because you can never have enough.The reason I mix and water so often is because the more often you add air and moisture plus having the things chopped in small pieces, the faster composting happens.
