My gardening friends and I have been growing organic food in this tricky climate for years — and the one thing I wish someone had told me on day one is this: Gulf gardening is its own thing.
Everything below is what actually works — real seasons, real results, real beginner tips. You've got this.

مضت عليّ سنوات وأنا أزرع في أجواء الخليج، وأكثر ما تمنيت أن أعرفه منذ البداية أنّ الزراعة عندنا تختلف عن كثير من الأماكن الأخرى. لكلّ مناخ طريقته، وهذا الدليل مبنيّ على تجربة حقيقية في الخليج.
كلّ ما يلي مبنيّ على مواسمنا الحقيقية وتجارب نجحت فعلاً، بطريقة بسيطة تناسب أيّ شخص يبدأ من الصفر.
The Gulf Cheat Code
قاعدة الخليج الذهبية
Gardening guides and advice from cooler, wetter climates dont always translate to the Gulf. Our summer heat, poor soils, and reversed growing season ask for a different approach — here’s why:
حرارة الخليج، وطبيعة التربة، ومواسم الزراعة عندنا تحتاج إلى طريقة مختلفة قليلاً — وهذه أهمّ الأساسيات.
In the Gulf we plant all year but mostly in the fall and winter (September–April). Summer is survival time, not planting time.
في الخليج نزرع في الخريف والشتاء (أكتوبر – مارس). الصيف غالباً وقت تجهيز وصيانة أكثر من كونه موسم زراعة.
Peak summer hits 50°C+. Even "full sun" plants might need some shade from 11 AM–3 PM.
تصل الحرارة في الصيف إلى ٥٠°م وأكثر. حتى النباتات التي تحبّ الشمس تحتاج إلى ظلّ من الساعة ١١ صباحاً حتى ٣ عصراً.
Our sand drains too fast and has almost no nutrients. You'll need potting mix or compost.
لا تعتمد على رمل الحديقة وحده. فهو يصرّف الماء بسرعة ولا يحتوي على مغذيات، لذا يجب خلطه بتربة زراعية أو كمبوست.
In the summer, early morning or before sunset and sometimes both! Watering at noon wastes too much water to evaporation. And in the winter, some days go by without a single drop of water, and the plants are happy.
في الصباح الباكر أو بعد المغرب. السقي وقت الظهيرة يُضيّع نصف الماء بالتبخّر.
5 Rules for First-Time Gardeners
خمس قواعد لمن يزرع لأوّل مرّة
🗺️ Start small
🗺️ ابدأ بشيء صغير جداً
One or a few pots. Seriously. Most beginners fail because they try to grow 20 things at once and can't keep up. Grow one basil plant. Win. Add more later.
ابدأ بشيء بسيط. حوض أو حوضان يكفيان في البداية. جرّب نبتة سهلة أوّلاً، ثم توسّع تدريجياً.
🌤️ Find 4–6 hours of sun
🌤️ ابحث عن ٤ إلى ٦ ساعات من الشمس
Any sunny spot works whether in a balcony, roof, yard corner. south-facing spots are the sweet spot. because they get the most sunshine especially during winter.
أيّ مكان تصله شمس الصباح يصلح — بلكونة، نافذة، أو زاوية في الفناء. الجهة الجنوبية هي الأفضل لزراعة النباتات المحبّة لساعات الشمس الطويلة.
🪴 Buy real potting mix
🪴 اشترِ تربة زراعية جاهزة
Don’t dig up your backyard. A bag of our Potting Soil Mix is the easiest start. A simple beginner blend: 1 part compost + 1 part coco peat + 1 part Corlite.
لا تكتفِ بالحفر في الرمل، فأنت بحاجة إلى إضافة سماد. أسهل بداية كيس تربة زراعية جاهزة. خلطة بسيطة: جزء كمبوست + جزء كوكو بيت + جزء كورلايت.
💦 When to water?
💦 اسقِ بغزارة لا بتكرار
Stick your finger into the soil. If it's dry, water thoroughly. If it's damp, walk away. Overwatering kills more plants than anything else.
اسقِ بعمق، لا بشكل متكرّر. اختبر التربة بإصبعك قبل السقي — إذا كانت جافّة، اسقِ جيداً حتى يخرج الماء من الأسفل. وإذا كانت رطبة، اتركها. السقي الزائد يقتل النباتات أكثر من الحرارة.
⏰ Plant at the right time
⏰ ازرع في الوقت المناسب
This is 80% of success in the Gulf. Planting tomatoes in May = disaster. Planting them in October = easy win. Use the calendar below.
اختيار الوقت المناسب للزراعة من أهمّ أسباب النجاح عندنا. زراعة الطماطم في مايو = كارثة. وزراعتها في أكتوبر = نجاح مؤكّد. استخدم التقويم في الأسفل.
6 Plants That Almost Can't Fail
ستّ نباتات لا تكاد تفشل
Forgiving, fast, and satisfying. Start with any of these and you'll get harvests in weeks, not months.
سهلة وسريعة وتمنحك نتيجة. ابدأ بأيٍّ منها وستحصد خلال أسابيع.

September
The actual season starts — heat begins to easeStill hot in the daytime — water morning and evening and shade young seedlings. Also, birds become especially hungry at this period and snack on your seedlings, so its best to cover them in net for protection.
October
Peak planting — the best month to startWeather is ideal now, most vegetables and flowers sprout easily. Sow seeds directly in the soil.
November
Cool and perfect for leafy greensGreat time for herbs and greens. They grow fast in this mild weather.
December
Its getting cold.Watch out for signs of powdery mildew on cucurbits and zinnias.
January
Very cold.Keep planting greens and enjoy the harvests.
February
Warming up — get ready for round two of the growing seasonWeather begins to warm — this is the last ideal time to plant warm-season crops before summer.
March
Last chance before the heatPlant heat loving crops now.
April
Heat rising — summer crops onlyChoose heat-tolerant plants only. Increase watering and mulch the soil to keep moisture.
May
Intense heat — more upkeep than plantingReduce new planting and focus on caring for existing plants. Shade and deep watering are essential.
June
Peak summer — a rest for the garden (and you!)Most plants can't handle this heat and start from seed. Use the time to improve soil and prep your beds. existing plants can survive but dont start new outdoors
July
The hottest monthPlanting is nearly paused. Keep soil moist and plan what you'll grow in September.
August
End of summer — prepare to beginStart tomato and pepper seedlings indoors now so they're ready to plant out in october.
Mistakes Every Beginner Makes
أخطاء يقع فيها كلّ مبتدئ
Overwatering suffocates roots. Check the soil first. Especially if drainage is an issue, where will the extra water go?
لا تُكثر من السقي في البداية. السقي الزائد يخنق الجذور، فتأكّد من حالة التربة أولاً ودَع التربة تستقرّ. أكثر النباتات تحتاج إلى ريّ غزير كلّ يومين أو ثلاثة، لا رشّاً يومياً.
Tomatoes need time to grow before summer burns them. Plant the seeds indoors in light in August and the transplants outside in october.
تحتاج الطماطم إلى وقت كي تنمو قبل أن يحرقها الصيف. ازرعها في أكتوبر أو بداية نوفمبر — لا في مارس.
It can carry pathogens and cause issues for delicate fragile seeds like damping off disease.
حتى الصبّار يحتاج إلى ماء وتصريف وتربة مناسبة. لا يوجد نبات بدون اهتمام، لكن هناك نباتات متسامحة — انظر القائمة في الأعلى.
If you're excited in summer, use that energy to prep. Buy pots, mix soil, plan the fall garden. Or explore the world of microgreens and sprouting. Planting starts in September.
إذا كنت متحمّساً في الصيف، فاستثمر هذا الحماس في التحضير. اشترِ الأحواض، وجهّز التربة، وخطّط لحديقة الخريف. الزراعة تبدأ في سبتمبر.
Every pot MUST have holes at the bottom. Roots sitting in water will rot within days. If the pot has no holes, drill them.
Or skip the drill — Smart Pots are fabric and drain through the whole bottom.
كلّ حوض يجب أن يحتوي على فتحات تصريف. الجذور التي تبقى في الماء تتعفّن خلال أيام. إذا كان الحوض بلا فتحات، فاحفرها.
أو تجنّب الحفر — أحواض سمارت بوت مصنوعة من قماش وتصرّف الماء من كامل قاعدتها.
Every gardener, including the pros, kills plants. Figure out what happened and try again.
Turn the loss into next season’s fuel — a bag of compost
كلّ مزارع — حتى المحترف — تموت له نباتات. هذا جزء طبيعي من التعلّم، ومع الوقت تتعلّم أكثر مع كلّ تجربة. اكتشف ما حدث وحاول مرّةً أخرى. الحديقة تُبنى على الكمبوست.
حوّل الخسارة وقوداً للموسم القادم — كيس كمبوست أو كمبوست ساك تفي بالغرض.

The Absolute-Beginner Checklist ✅
قائمة من يزرع لأوّل مرّة ✅
- Pick ONE plant from the 6-plant list above. Just one.
- Buy: a pot with drainage holes or a fabric pot, a bag of organic potting mix, and your seeds or seedling.
- Find a spot that gets 4–6 hours of morning sun. In the ground, balcony, windowsill, or yard — all fine.
- Fill the pot with soil. Plant your seed at the depth on the packet (usually 2× the seed's size) or transplant your seedling.
- Water gently until it drips from the bottom. Then wait.
- Check the soil daily by poking a finger in. Water only when the top inch is dry.
- Take a photo on day 1. Take another every week. Watch it grow.
- When you harvest, please post it and tag @itallgrows.

- اختر نبتةً واحدةً فقط من قائمة الستّ في الأعلى. واحدة فقط.
- اشتر: حوض بفتحات تصريف، وكيس تربة زراعية عضوية، وبذور أو شتلة من مشتل قريب.

- املأ الحوض بالتربة. ازرع البذرة على العمق المذكور على العلبة (عادةً ٢ إلى ٣ أضعاف حجم البذرة) أو انقل الشتلة.
- اسقِ برفق حتى يخرج الماء من الأسفل. ثم انتظر.
- افحص التربة يومياً بإصبعك. لا تسقِ إلا إذا كانت البوصة الأولى جافّة.
- صوّر اليوم الأوّل، ثم صوّر كلّ أسبوع. وشاهدها تكبر.
