Polar Bear Giant Pumpkin Plant

Already growing. Just plant it.Skip the seed stage — this vine is ready to run. Give it room and it grows a bright white pumpkin the size of a beach ball.

A white giant. Expect 10–30 kg. Stays white as it ripens — it doesn't turn cream or yellow.

Thick walls, so it keeps for months on a shelf or by the door.

Needs space. One plant spreads 3–5 m along the ground.

When to pick: About 3½–4 months. Skin hard, stem dry and woody. Leave a hand's length of stem on.

Planting steps in detail

You need: Potting Soil Mix, compost and a shovel. Best in the ground, in the sunniest spot you have, with 4 m of free space around it. Or the biggest pot you own, 60 cm or wider.

1. Ground: dig a wide hole, mix in a bucket of compost. Pot: fill with Potting Soil Mix and a few handfuls of compost.

2. Hole twice the size of the small pot. Water the small pot an hour before.

3. Squeeze the pot, slide out with the soil ball whole. Never pull the stem, never shake the roots.

4. Plant it at the same depth it was in the small pot. Press gently, water until it drains. One plant per spot — giants don't share.

Late afternoon, never at noon. No feeding for the first 2 weeks.

How to grow a really big one

1. Space. One plant, lots of room. The vine runs 3–5 m along the ground. Don't cut it back.

2. Water deep. Every morning in warm weather, every 2–3 days in cool weather. A big pumpkin is mostly water.

3. Feed. From week 3, feed every 2 weeks. Compost tea or an all-purpose organic fertiliser.

4. Help the flowers. Males open first (thin stem). Females have a tiny pumpkin under the flower. In the morning, dab a male flower into the female. Bees do this too, but don't count on it.

5. Keep one. When a few fruits are the size of a tennis ball, keep the best one and pinch off the rest. All the energy goes to one pumpkin.

6. Off the ground. Slide a Melon Protector or a flat tile under it so it stays dry and clean.

7. Shade the fruit. In hot months, a piece of cardboard or shade cloth over the pumpkin itself stops the skin from scorching.

Harvest: about 110 days from planting. Cut, don't pull. Leave it in the sun for a week so the skin hardens and the white sets.

From the farmbusy weeks, allow 2–3 days
