Smart Transplanter

A small fabric pot for the in-between stage: when a seedling has outgrown its tray but is not ready for its final pot. Roots grow into a tight, healthy ball instead of circling, so the plant settles fast when you move it on. Also a good home for one herb on a kitchen windowsill.

Why we use fabric pots

  • Roots breathe. When a root reaches the fabric wall it stops and branches, instead of circling. The result is a strong, healthy root ball.
  • Hard to overwater. Extra water leaves through the fabric, so the soil never sits in water.
  • Cooler soil in our heat. The fabric releases heat instead of holding it like black plastic does.
  • Lasts for years. Empty it, rinse it, fold it, and use it again next season.

Which size? What can you grow in it?

One bag of our Potting Soil Mix fills 5 gallons. The numbers below are for one pot, planted the way we plant at home.

1 gallon pot

1 gallon · 4 litres

about 18 cm wide, 15 cm tall

Grow: 1 seedling to grow on before it moves to a bigger pot · 1 basil, mint or parsley · 1 lettuce

Soil: ¼ bag

2 gallon pot

2 gallon · 8 litres

about 21 cm wide, 18 cm tall

Grow: 1 herb plant (basil, mint, coriander or parsley) · 2 lettuce · 8 radishes · 1 strawberry

Soil: ½ bag

How to use it

Fill with seed-starting mix or potting mix, move the seedling in with its soil, and water gently. Keep it in bright light but out of the afternoon sun. When roots show through the fabric, it is time for the final pot. Rinse and reuse.
